EUROPE
– The European Consequences of Germany’s Election (Kemal Dervis, Project-Syndicate). Nearly a century ago, in 1919, John Maynard Keynes analyzed the economic conseguences of the peace following Germany’s defeat in World War I. To be sure, the consequences of Germany’s general election on September 22 will not be nearly as momentous. But the outcome will not be as inconsequential as most analysts currently claim. – A New Greek Test for Europe (Ashoka Mody, Project-Syndicate). Over the last year, it has been easy to lose sight of the Greek debt crisis. Brimming with official funds, Greece was apparently on the mend. Though privatization plans lagged, the Greeks won high marks for doubling down on fiscal austerity. In Europe’s summer of quiet triumphalism, ever-lower expectations were easy to beat. GLOBAL
– Water Risk on the Rise (Andrew Steer, Project-Syndicate). Water is never far from the news these days. This summer, northern India experienced one of its heaviest monsoon seasons in 80 years, leaving more than 800 people dead and forcing another 100,000 from their homes. Meanwhile, Central Europe faced its worst flooding in decades after heavy rains swelled major rivers like the Elbe and the Danube. In the United States, nearly half the country continues to suffer from drought, while heavy rainfall has broken records in the Northeast, devastated crops in the South, and now is inundating Colorado. – Aggression Against Libya: Looking at Past and Outlook for Future (I) (Alexander Mezyaev, Strategic Culture Foundation).  The threat of US aggression against Syria remains imminent. It is highly propitious to go back again to the legal assessment of NATO and the United Nations leadership actions at the time of operation against Libya. (…). http://www.strategic-culture.org/news/2013/09/16/aggression-against-libya-looking-at-past-and-outlook-for-future-i.html – The Genesis of the Syrian Crisis and the Perpetual War of the U.S. (Elena Ponomareva, Strategic Culture Foundation). During the Great Depression era, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd president of the U.S. and one of the most eminent statesmen of the first half of the 20th century, stated, “One of my main goals is to keep bankers and businessmen from committing suicide.” This touching concern turned into an enormous tragedy for all mankind: World War II, which was stirred up mainly by American industrialists and financiers. Over 54 million people were killed in that war, 90 million were wounded, and 28 million of those wounded were disabled. (…). http://temi.repubblica.it/limes/il-patto-inattuabile-ma-decisivo-sulla-siria/51912 – The Syrian “deal” and Russia’s newfound clout (Ivan Nechepurenko, Aspenia online). When Vladimir Putin addressed “the American people and their political leaders” on the pages of The New York Times on September 11, 2013 he knew they would listen. While Barack Obama found himself lost in a quagmire of trying to match his usual rhetoric with action, his Russian counterpart was quick to step into the void and fill it with a proposal the US could not reject.
