Prof. Sara Chiappalupi attained a Specialist Degree in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology with honors and a Ph.D. in Biology and Experimental Medicine at the University of Perugia. In 2022, she attained the National Academic Qualification to serve as an Associate Professor in the competitive field 05/H1—Human Anatomy.
Since 2009, she has conducted research at the Human Anatomy Section of the Department of Experimental Medicine/Medicine and Surgery at the University of Perugia. Her research activity is mainly focused on the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in skeletal muscle biology, with a particular interest in the role of the RAGE receptor (receptor for advanced glycation end-products) and its ligands in myogenesis, muscle regeneration, and pathological conditions associated with muscle mass loss, such as sarcopenia and cancer-related cachexia. Furthermore, she is interensted in the development of innovative therapeutic approaches based on the use of microencapsulated Sertoli cells and mesenchymal stem cells for Duchenne muscular dystrophy and inflammatory myopathies. She participated in the study of the effects of microgravity on human skeletal muscle through the MyoGravity project as part of the VITA-BIOMISSION mission funded by the Italian Space Agency, conducting a research period as a Visiting Scientist at the NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) laboratories at the Kennedy Space Center (Cape Canaveral, FL, USA).
She co-authored numerous scientific publications in international peer-reviewed journals and has presented many papers at national and international conferences.
She participated in numerous research projects funded by national and international institutions such as AIRC (Italian Association for Cancer Research), ASI (Italian Space Agency), AFM (Association Française contre les Myopathies), and Parent Project Onlus. Since 2021, she has been involved in AIRC-funded research focused on studying the role of the RAGE receptor in cancer-associated cachexia.
In addition to her scientific work, she has taught and provided instructional support in various Degree programs at the University of Perugia, with a particular focus on teaching human anatomy, as well as tutoring and supervising experimental and literature-review dissertations.

The professor is available to receive the students at the end of the lessons. However, the students may also request an appointment by email.
