Giovanni Lombardi is Associate Professor of Clinical Biochemistry and Clinical Molecular Biology (SSD BIOS-09/A) at Link Campus University – Rome.
He is Director of the Laboratory of Experimental Biochemistry and Advanced Diagnostics at the IRCCS Galeazzi-Sant’Ambrogio Hospital (Milan, Italy), and Associate Professor of Health Sciences at Zakład Lekkiej Atletyki i Przygotowania Motoryczneg, Akademia Wychowania Fizycznego im. Eugenisza Piaseckiego (Department of Athletics, Strength and Conditioning, Poznań University of Physical Education, Poznań, Poland).
Until 2026, he held the position of Adjunct Professor and Subject Specialist in Laboratory Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University (Milan, Italy).
He attained a Bachelor's Degree in Medical Biotechnology in 2004, a Master’s Degree in Medical Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine in 2006, and a PhD in Biochemistry in 2009 at the University of Milan.
He has carried out his professional career, beginning with his PhD at the IRCCS Galeazzi-Sant’Ambrogio Hospital (formerly the IRCCS Galeazzi Orthopaedic Institute). He coordinates a research group focusing on the study of the pathophysiology of the musculoskeletal system, with a particular interest in diagnostic and endocrinological aspects.
In particular, his research focuses on the identification of molecular markers – specifically miRNAs and other non-coding RNAs – of musculoskeletal function, and their relationship with classical biochemical markers; and on the identification and study of markers of endocrine function in bone and muscle tissues, with a particular focus on the role of extracellular vesicles.
In the field of biomarkers, both biochemical and molecular, considerable attention is given to pre-analytical variability linked to the sample — matrix, processing, storage — and to the patient — physical exercise, training, pathological condition.
Holding the title of European Specialist in Laboratory Medicine (EuSpLM) from the European Federation of Laboratory Medicine (EFLM), he holds the following positions in Italian and international scientific societies:
- since 2024, member of the “Joint International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) Working Group and International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC) Committee on Bone Metabolism”;
- since 2024, a member of the Scientific Committee for Research of the Italian Society for Osteoporosis, Mineral Metabolism and Skeletal Diseases (SIOMMMS);
- dal 2023, membro eletto dello Scientific Committee on Bone Metabolism dell’IFCC, con funzione di membro corrispondente dal 2018 al 2023;
- since 2023, an elected member of the IFCC’s Scientific Committee on Bone Metabolism, having served as a corresponding member from 2018 to 2023;
- since 2020, member of the EFLM Academy;
- since 2019, member of the European Scientific Committee of the Fundación de Investigación en Ciencias de la Actividad Física y del Deporte (FICAFD)
- since 2017, coordinator of the "Clinical Biochemistry and Metabolism of Bone and Muscle Tissue" study group at SIBioC (Italian Society of Clinical Biochemistry and Clinical Molecular Biology – Laboratory Medicine);
- since 2017, vice-chair of the ‘Whole-Body Cryotherapy’ working group at the International Institute of Refrigeration (IIF).
He is a member of the Editorial Board of Frontiers in Endocrinology – Bone Section, Scientific Reports, Hormone Molecular Biology and Clinical Investigation, and Advanced Exercise and Health Science; a member of the advisory board of the Journal of Sport Sciences.
He has reviewed 165 articles in 83 international journals (Publons: I-2414-2012).
He authored 212 articles published in international peer-reviewed journals, with 6605 citations and an h-index of 42 (source: Web of Science, October 2026). Since 2022, he has been listed among the World’s Top 2% Scientists (Stanford University-Elsevier), ranking, for the year 2026, #115.110 in the Main Field “Clinical Medicine” and #1.395 in Subfield 1 “Endocrinology & Metabolism”
He has secured extramural funding for research projects—as principal investigator (PI), co-PI, or co-investigator—totaling approximately €5,000,000, in addition to access to national and European technological and infrastructure platforms.
