Associate Professor – SSD 06/MEDS-19 Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation Medicine

Since 2019, Luca Labianca has been an orthopedic surgeon at the Orthopedics and Traumatology Clinical Unit of the Sant'Andrea University Hospital – Sapienza University of Rome, where he specializes in pediatric orthopedics. His primary area of expertise is neuromuscular and early-onset spinal deformities, with a particular focus on spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).

He is a specialist in Orthopedics and Traumatology and in Sports Medicine. He earned his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart and a Master’s Degree in Telemedicine and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Parma. He trained as a visiting fellow at the University of Iowa under Prof. Stuart Weinstein.

He has worked on the rehabilitation field for years: he has developed a protocol for aquatic rehabilitation, taught it in courses on Psychomotor Polysensory Hydrostimulation (IPOP), and presented it in scientific publications and at conferences such as the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation ...
(ISPRM)

He collaborates with Famiglie SMA association, NeMO Clinical Centers, and Officina dei Sensi in Ascoli Piceno on projects dedicated to providing care for children with neuromuscular diseases and their families.

He has been a team doctor for the FIGC National Teams since 2006. Since 2012, he has been an instructor and organizer for the UEFA Football Doctor Education Program. He participates in European research projects on injuries in youth soccer and on emergency training on the field using virtual reality (Erasmus+).

His research interests include:

  • spinal surgery for neuromuscular disorders;
  • sports traumatology and athletes’ return to play;
  • neurological and neuromuscular rehabilitation;
  • telemedicine and the application of artificial intelligence in orthopedics.
     

He is the author of over 50 publications in indexed international journals.

OFFICE HOURS
