Valentina Balzarotti graduated at the University of Bologna, attained her Specialization Diploma at the University of Florence and earned her PhD from Roma Tre University in 2020. Her dissertation, focused on the Bolognese painter Lorenzo Sabatini, was included in the first monograph dedicated to this artist, published in 2021. She holds the National Scientific Qualification as Associate Professor (ASN 2022) and has gained significant international and national experience, including post-doctoral research positions at the Bibliotheca Hertziana, Max-Planck-Institut für Kunstgeschichte (2020-2022), and scholarships such as that of the Fondazione 1563 per l'Arte e la Cultura in Turin. Furthermore, she held the position of contract professor at the Universities of L'Aquila, Rome “Tor Vergata,” and Roma Tre.

Her research focuses mainly on the artistic culture of Mannerism and the Counter-Reformation, with particular attention to the Bologna-Rome axis. His interests have expanded to include the use of different media in 16th-century decorative projects, the relationship between painting and architecture, and the history of art criticism, analyzing the rediscovery of the protagonists of 17th-century Emilian painting at the beginning of the 20th century, topics on which he has published numerous articles and contributed to conferences and seminars.

Currently, she is tenure track researcher in modern art history at Link Campus University, Rome.
