Professor Ylenia Della Rocca carries out intensive scientific research of national and international importance in the fields of medical biotechnology, stem cells, and regenerative medicine. Trained at the University of L'Aquila, the CNR, the “S. Spirito” Hospital in Pescara, the “S. Salvatore” Hospital in L'Aquila, and the “G. d'Annunzio” University, where she obtained her PhD, she has also carried out part of her research abroad, at the University of Barcelona and the Josep Carreras Institute.Her scientific activities have led to the development of a new line of induced pluripotent stem cells, obtained by reprogramming gum stem cells for the first time in the world, using an innovative method, which is the subject of a patent application.
During her academic and laboratory experience, she has worked on 2D and 3D cell cultures, tissue regeneration, epigenetics, cell differentiation, innovative models of carcinogenesis, and biomaterial evaluation. She has participated in major national projects, including PNRR and PRIN, dedicated to precision medicine and neurodegenerative diseases, respectively.
She authored over 30 scientific articles with wide international circulation, she has been a speaker at Italian and international conferences and represented Italian research at Expo 2020 Dubai. She has held editorial positions for prestigious scientific journals and has received numerous national and international awards. She is the youngest associate professor in Italy in her field.
She taught histology, embryology, translational medicine, and biomaterials, and is a member of Italian and international scientific societies. In addition to her research, she is also strongly committed to scientific dissemination as curator and presenter of the television program “Medicina Facile” on Rete8 and is the founder of the non-profit association “Sorrisi in Ospedale (ASIO)”, which promotes medicine that combines science, care, and empathy.
